I'd like to import a few sprites that'd overwrite a boss or two in your hack; however, the way YY-CHR views the sprites in the rom are a bit discouraging...

The hack is coming along. My time spent on it is somewhat diminished simply because I am also unemployed and looking for work. I'm still getting some stuff done however. I've only got the last bits of the Fire area and then I'll tackle the Air area before heading to the Doom Castle. I'm over 50% done which is a good thing! I should have this hack ready and complete by the end of summer. I am also tweaking my MQ Multi Editor along with my hack as well.

Yea, I noticed the monster graphics are a bit "meh" on how they look in the tile editing programs.

The main graphics I'd like to replace are the battle backgrounds and possibly some of the story items that need a bit more tweaking. But, let me know what you got!

This looks good. Let me know if you need a tester/spriter or ideas for music.

Regarding spriting.
It's good that you're willing to help and don't let me discourage; however, the actual implementation process isn't easy at all. Overworld sprites look very doable, but not so much boss or normal enemy sprites. I suggest either using the palettes that come with this game instead of creating all new ones. In a 3BPP game that has palette sizes of 8 colors, you tend to have a lot of sprites and tiles utilizing the same palette. This means that when you change one color, it may look good for sprite or tile you're changing it for and look horrid for another. You could tweak the palettes and do minor adjustments to the colors to liven them up without it look horrible.

Example of how the Town Tiles are viewed in YY-CHR, for Archaic.

I was thinking more of doing a custom sprite design if I have an idea of characters or what you're going for with them. I don't really do anything but character sprites, and I usually don't mess with the palette too much anyway, so I'd keep the original colors as is.

edit: question jce3000gt, how do i up the sound pitch and turning down the snes9x emu volume?

Snes9x 1.52 has even better SPC700 emulation, with Blaarg's S-DSP core.

Yee, I registered just to post in this thread!

A hacker I am not (I tried my hand once upon a long time ago with pitiable results) but this game is a slice of my childhood and I can't tell you how excited I am to see you doing this.

If you still need it, I can easily go through a revision of the game script. I'm not terribly sure what limitations I'd have as far as characters per instance of dialogue go, though. That was one of the things I never truly grasped way back when. I do write as a hobby, for what it's worth.

Example before/after scripting:

Before:
Benjamin: My village is gone!! What is going on?
Man: This place is going to sink any second! Let's climb up quick!
Man: Press the "B" Button, and jump across!

(Benjamin and Man look at a tower)
Man: Look over there. That's the Focus Tower, once the heart of the World. An
old Prophecy says, "The vile 4 will steal the Power, and divide the World
behind 4 doors. At that time the Knight will appear!" The Prophecy has now come
true. 4 monsters have locked the doors of the Focus Tower and escaped with the
keys. They're draining the light from the 4 Crystals of the Earth, and the
World is in Chaos. The people are in desperate need of help. Benjamin, only you
can save the Crystals and the world.
Benjamin: Me?
Man: Yes, you Benjamin! Only you could be the Knight spoken in the Prophecy...
(Monster appears)
Man: Look out! A monster!

(After battle)
Man: Seems I was right! At last I've found a true knight!
Benjamin: But you said you were SURE I was the one!
Man: Well, actually it was more of a guess...
Benjamin: Forget it. Just tell me where I can find the Crystals.
Man: It's up to you to find them.
(Mountain shakes)
Man: This place is becoming dangerous! Follow me to the Level Forest!
(Old Man leaves)
Benjamin: Got to get out of here. Who is that guy, any way?

(Level Forest)
Benjamin: There you are! What do you think I should do first?
Man: Save the Crystal of Earth. See you!
(Old Man leaves)

Old Man: That boulder is blocking my way back to town. Would you shove it
aside?
(After moving rock)
Old Man: Thank you! If you want to go through this forest, find Kaeli in
Foresta and show her this.

After:
(Benjamin runs up the shaking mountain)
Benjamin:Wh-What's happened? My village-
Man: No time for that! Hurry, this way!
Man: Press "B", and leap across the chasm!

(Benjamin and Man look at a tower)
Man: Do you see it, Benjamin? That is the Focus Tower, the centerpoint of the
world, and "focus" of the four Crystals that fuel it. But now, the Crystals have
been stolen, and along with them, the keys to Focus Tower. Your village is
not the only one to suffer, Benjamin... the entire world is in upheaval. Rivers
are freezing, lush forests are dying. The elements themselves are in a state
of chaos. If nothing is done, the world itself will surely be engulfed in such
darkness from which there will be no return.
Benjamin: Wh-What do we do?
Man: A Prophecy speaks of a boy, wielding Mystic Weapons, that will --
(Monster appears)
Man: Look out! Defend yourself, Benjamin!

(After battle)
Man: Hmm... Not bad. You show some potential.
Benjamin: Potential? Did you see the size of that thing? I'm amazing!
Man: Ho ho, I'm not sure I would go that far.
(Benjamin shrugs.)
Benjamin: How do you know my name, anyway?
Man: Well --
(Mountain shakes)
Man: No time now. We've got to get out of here, Benjamin. Quickly, to the forest!
(Man leaves)
Benjamin: H-Hey! Wait up!

(Level Forest)
Benjamin: There you are! I've got some questions for you --
Man: Later. First, make your way north. The Crystal of Earth is being held
in the desert. Free it, and I'll see you again.
(Man leaves)

(Old man by stone)
Old Man: Confounded stone! If I were ten years younger... Hey, you! Push
this thing aside fer meh, will ye?
(After moving rock)
Old Man: Thank ye, lad! If ye're headed into town, take this and show it
to a girl named Kaeli. Her family's protected the forest fer years; she'll
want ter know what's happenin' to it.
(Obtain Tree Wither)

--
I tried to keep at least the number of lines similar in these cases; like I said I'm not 100% sure what limitations there are.
