I actually use ZD a lot, but don't save. The event editor is the best tool that's been released, so I mock up all of my events in ZD and then hand-enter the hex via HxD. I just always load a backup rom into ZD and I never hit save.
For the WoR issue, I think it's that the tools we have can't correctly compress the minimap. Madsiur's improved minimap patch both improves the minimap and fixes this issue.
