RAM locations for a neat little FF6 project

Hello! I've started dabbling in some interesting FF6 hacking (and even recently started live-translating a Japanese FF6 hack here) and I'm wondering if anyone here might be able to help me out with a problem.

Basically, I'm hoping to find a way, at any given time, to know if the game is in battle or not. I assume there's something in RAM that is reliably set one way in battle but set another way when not in battle, or at the very least maybe some address on the stack that I can search for to know that a battle is happening. Would any of you guys have any ideas/suggestions?

Ah welcome, Tomato! I assume this must be the same Tomato who translated Mother 3? I'm sorry I cannot help with your question, but hopefully someone here can. I just wanted to say hello and I'm a fan. =)

That hack there you are playing in the video, isn't that Tsushiy's hack, FFVI: Tsushiy Edition? He is a frequent on this site. Or is that 'T Edition' some other large Japanese base hack? I've always assumed the T was for Tsushiy.

It was Tsushiy for sure... i read the whole "Tsushiy edition" name, while the emulator was loading the rom...

I thought he dealt only with music... what else did he do?

I'm not too sure if this is actually what you're looking for, but on the RAM Map (found here) seems to indicate it might be at $3A8F.

FF6-T is a hack I made. However, because they are for FF6j, I'm sorry.

It is thought because it asked to provide the technology to many people in this site, and be nice if you can give back even a little.

So... your hack is based on the J version because you're japanese, or what?

Yep, I worked on Mother 3 a few years back. Actually, I recently streamed a full playthrough of Mother 3 before releasing the latest translation patch, and in doing so I found that I really like streaming Japanese games. I'm hoping to stream/live-translate even more Japanese-only games and ROM hacks in the future, it's a lot of fun. Tsushiy's T-Edition hack is one of the big Japanese hacks I've heard about for a long time and always wanted to try out Tsushiy even showed up during a stream last week, it was a real surprise!

Anyway, I did see the "active battle" thing in the RAM map before, but I just assumed that it referred to the active/wait battle system setting. I haven't actually checked it, though, so I'll do that when I get a chance. Thanks for the reminder/suggestion!

Hopefully Romancing Saga 3.12 hack is on your list of games to stream and possibly translate someday!

Probably my wish is out of theme, but i'd really like that someone will someday translate the following 2 games:

- La pucelle: Ragnarok(psp);
- Phantom(Makai) Kingdom(psp)

I wasn't 100% sure if my experiment was going to work or not, but here are the results! It's just a VERY rough proof-of-concept but it's pretty neat and could make future Japanese games I play on stream more understandable/interesting for people
