How would I go about converting MP3 to midi? I've tried a converter but the tune was ruined. I'm in need of some custom pieces, can't really use the original ones.

And if by any chance someone has creepy, sober little tunes in MIDI format maybe I could use that? *wink*

There are some MP3 to midi converters out there, I've never had any luck with them either though and cannot even refer you to one. Converting an MP3 to midi would most likely result in a ton of notes all over the place, though maybe if it's a good converter it could separate the notes to go on different tracks, but still that's the main problem with an MP3 to midi conversion for music hacking purposes, as we can only have up to 8 channels and can't have notes playing all over each other (chords). So if possible try and find a midi file of the song.

Firstly, have you taken a look at either of the music hacking tutorials?

I had a look at this one:

Injecting a song data in the rom https://www.ff6hacking.com/forums/showth...p?tid=2584

So the conversion pretty much wrecks the piece, huh. There should be some MIDI databases on the net, I'll look into that.

That tutorial is good for once you get a hold of the music data, whatever it may be, but in order to get your own custom song data you'll need to do the main music hacking endeavor, which there are 2 different ways to go about it:

Harder, tedious manual way: https://www.ff6hacking.com/forums/showth...ic+hacking
Much easier, yet still challenging at times MML way: https://www.ff6hacking.com/forums/showth...l+tutorial

There's a bunch of song hacks done here also if you didn't know that you might find use for:
https://www.ff6hacking.com/forums/showth...p?tid=2558
This is what that first tutorial you linked was made for, mostly.

Anyway you should get a better idea of the process from those links there.

The problem with the mp3 to midi converter is that you can't really make a good conversion. A mp3 is compressed audio to a medium or lower quality while a midi is a more a detailed and exact map of all notes, instruments and note lengths. It's just not the same thing. Those converters will work for simple piano mp3 but other than that it's a failure or a very approximate result you'll get.

For VG music this is a good midi source: http://www.vgmusic.com/

Otherwise you can find a lot of midi online in different places. Some are specialized in movies midi or pop music. Finally if you don't find I got two ~50 000 midi archives on my disc. You can always send me a pm for something you can't find online. One is basically all the GeoCities existing midis before its closing and the second one a more structured collection of various midis.

This might also be handy: https://www.ff6hacking.com/wiki/doku.php...usic_codes

It would be cool to eventually get the MML file format and commands on the wiki.
