Could be like a fish that gets pissed off for Celes taking all the fish to Cid (killing them), it could be like the last fish you need to get to save him. A big bad boss fish.
As for the bird, I got nothin' lol...maybe he can join the fish (or Celes) in that battle as well, since he is also on the beach there.

I keep thinking Serpent trench run with a party full of fish. Instead of a diving helmet they eat some funny cake and go for a ride.

That makes me think something like Breath of fires for snes... if i remember it was possible to travel in the sea morphing into a big fish!
