Well, it's not just a mere illusion the world map: it's a wide place with plenty of different monsters, it's a great way to hide secret locations and i just love to travel with a vehicle through world map... i bet everyone at least once kept the finger on accelerator button for the falcon/blackjack and let it fly through the sky without a real destination, while thinking where to go next, right? 
About nasty NPC... how 'bout those damned submaps that were randomly generated in secret dungeons of FF1? you know, some floor were a city, instead of a dungeon floor and was filled with narrow places, the worst NPC ever, which were there with the only purpose to hinder your movements and sparkly tiles, which make start a battle if you step on them ;[
