Hacking Battle Backgrounds
*Please Read Carefully*
Before you read any further, know that the actual process of hacking the background is relitively easy but making it look good is not. We are essentially hacking the graphics, not the tile editor. This means you're replacing a background and can't edit the tiles placement. This will make hacking a bg extremely diffiuclty, or rather time consuming. FFVI reuses tiles to save space, which means the battle BG's aren't one big image you can just extract and edit easily. That being said, here is my work so far.
To hack battle backgrounds, you must know how to hack compressed graphics. If not, please read my tutorial on how to. Below are two screenshots and a download to the decompressed .bin file to edit. It's enough to get you all started in the right direction. The first sceenshot depicts the default unedited Narshe battle background, it makes a good reference when hacking it in YY-CHR or any other editor you choose. It shows tile placement.

I wonder if it would be possible to extract a specific battle background from FF4 and importing it to FF6? Is it that difficult?

Considering that each Background is constructed by placement rather than by just drawing an image, I'd say it's pretty difficult.
I suspect that for the best results, you'll want to use a background that is also made up of small tiles. So something like NES Mario may in fact be a good test subject. Similarly, if you just want to do small edits to the 'edges' of the background, it seems pretty doable.
But completely changing the background looks like more trouble than its worth at this point. Maybe someone will hack the assembly function for the BGs and make an editor at some point, though?
