Battle Background

Looking over the various docs floating around I'm having trouble figuring out how the battle backgrounds are assembled.
The pointers at 0x271850 don't seem to really point to the tile data, at least not in a format I understand. I know there's tile assembly data around too, but at the moment I'm just trying to find the pointers / graphics data for the backgrounds. I can worry about the assembly later.
