Map editing: List of unused tilemaps?

Hello all,

just a few quick questions about map editing with FF6LE-CE as I'm currently in the middle of drawing some additional maps:

1) Is there a list of tilemaps which are unused in the vanilla game somewhere around? I couldn't find one on the forums, so I did a quick look through all maps in the editor and came up with the following:

Tilemaps 2C, A8, A9, F5, 12A, 12D, 12E, 15E, 15F didn't show up, so is it safe to assume that these are indeed unused and thus available for custom maps?

2) What is the upper limit of different tilemaps in the game? The ones listed above will likely not be sufficient for my project, so I'm looking for ways to get additional tilemaps available. The highest tilemap number in the editor is 15E, and 15F seems to work okay, too, but going higher than that led to an issue of not saving the map correctly. I tried tilemaps 160 for Layer 1 and 161 for Layer 2, but after 4 hours of map drawing and saving, I had to find that my new map was gone after reopening the editor. I never got a warning message when increasing the tilemap numbers, nor while drawing my huge map. I doubt that I exceeded the available space, as this would normally produce the warning message informing you that it didn't save, so I'm not sure what's going on.

3) Can a tilemap only be assigned to one Layer, or can it be used for two or three layers as well? Like, if a certain tilemap number is currently used for Layer 1, it only contains the Layer 1 tiles of that map, right? So could that same tilemap number be used in a different map for Layer 2, containing only Layer 2 tiles this time? Or is any tilemap number restricted to use of a single layer? (oh man, I hope you understand that question, lol)

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I don't know the inner workings of FF6LE-CE very well, but I think I can answer your questions in general.

1) Here's a list of all the tilemaps that show up in the vanilla maps (sorry the indices are in decimal, not hex). If it's not in the list, it's never used. I think you got all of them. You can also use tilemap 0x0144. I think you should be able to use any of the unused ones with no problems.

2) I believe the upper limit for the number of tilemaps is actually 1024, because there are 10 bits available to store the index for each map.  I checked the asm code where the pointers get calculated and I didn't see anything that would overflow. I'm not sure how many FF6LE-CE supports though.

3) I think I understand what you're saying here. You should be able to use any tilemap for any layer (or multiple layers) on a map. Even layer 3, which is treated differently than layers 1 and 2 for other things.

This is definitely a bug with the editor. I think you're the first person that actually tries to add new maps with the editor with tilemaps IDs beyond the normal range. I remember I did basic tests with this but I probably missed something. I'll look at this this weekend and come back to you.

Thanks both of you for your answers, I guess I will hold on creating new tilemaps for now and use the remaining unused ones first.

I used a vanilla ROM and made the default expansion. Then on map 0x19F I used tilemap $160 (L1) and $161 (L2) and draw some tiles on each layers. I saved the levels then saved the ROM and when reopening the editor and re-loading the ROM my changes on the new map were still there. I did the same with map $1A0, this time with tilemap $162 (L1) and $163 (L2). I have not modified any map property and I used the default tileset. I also did not test the map in-game.

Do you have more details regarding the saving bug?

Alright, I'll try to give a bit more details:

My map expansion was the following: NPCs, events, Exits and Chests expansion bank is F7, Locations Tilemaps expansion starting bank is F8, 5 banks for tilemaps data (so it should be from bank F8 to bank FC). I didn't do the chest expansion yet.

I enlarged the map to 2048 x 2048, all 3 layers (that was before learning in the other thread that 2048 x 1024 is apparently the maximum the game can handle). I drew a pretty big map there and saved, but the wierd thing is: only the first 2-3 lines of the map seem to have saved, with the rest being gone. Here's a pic to see what it looks like:

And thanks by the way for looking into this, I really appreciate it! If you need any more information, I can also send you my game.
