For years I've been an avid follower of some particular mods/hacks, most of them based on old classic games for SNES or PC. These are my favorites:

Fallout 2 Restoration Project
(http://www.nma-fallout.com/threads/fallo...on.202265/)

My go-to enhancement mod for FO2. It's a pretty thorough overhaul of the game, from resolution options to expanded/additional towns and quests. Nowadays I can't imagine playing without it.

Mother 2 Deluxe
(https://forum.starmen.net/forum/Communit...xe/page/1/)

Earthbound hack. It ramps up the difficulty, while retooling the gameplay with a lot of nice, thoughtful changes. It's got refurbished character sprites, too. Much more than a hardtype hack!

Super Metroid: Redesign
(http://forum.metroidconstruction.com/ind...468.0.html)

A massive remake of the original SM, while keeping to traditional gameplay and elements. Quite an ambitious hack, I love it. Also I've seen Lenophis hanging around that forum, which is pretty cool.

So, do you guys have an interest in other hacks/hacking scenes? Let's see your favorites.

Step forward, spriters! We are also responsible to make hacks look new and fresh, we are no less important than code or ASM hackers! CHARGE!!

But dude! It's so much more than that... an all-around great hack, for reals. Play it. At least take a look at the changes in the front page...

Been following this project for years:
SoM Editor: http://somedit.blogspot.com/
The tool was released, but it's still a beta pretty much with some features not yet included: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/985/
I love Secret of Mana very much and look forward to starting some sort of large hack someday.

This is a great SoM hack still in the works I've been following as well, it focuses on changing much of the actual gameplay mechanics for the much better:
http://acmlm.kafuka.org/board/thread.php?id=8318 or http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.ph...093.0.html

I also used to follow CT Crimson Echoes of course, before I was even into ROM hacking. After they forfeited the project though these guys took it up and renamed it Flames of Eternity: http://metronomeproject.blogspot.com/

I helped work on it actually with them just a bit before getting too tied up with RotDS and decided to leave, but my name is in the credits lol. I wasn't too happy with the project leader as well, basically stealing what was Crimson Echoes and claiming it his, throwing in some dumb dialog and ideas along the way. But yeah, I still play the game and love the project as a whole, but sadly it seems there is no longer any work or attention from the developers going into it.

I'm also really looking forward to this project:
Secret of Evermore 2 - An Alchemist Reborn - http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.ph...666.0.html

Those are the only other real forums I've followed, I do quite enjoy other hacks but I've not followed them the same way over a forum.

The most interesting projects i'm following/that are finished/that have a demo at least  are those:

https://sotnhacked.wordpress.com/author/esco1979/
it's a castlevania hack WIP that sounds amazing and appearently the guy will submit the editor he used when he will finish the hack.
the bad news are that, despite the cool videos about the project, sounds like it will take a looooooooooooooooooooooooooot of time...

http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=6099
Brutal Mario World, i've never seen an hack so much impressive like this one... if you didn't use mario as player it would be difficult to understand
that you're playing a Super Mario World hack. at the moment there's a very big demo, actually 2 demos (the second one is the 8.1 version of the beta
and features a bunch of new stuff, a bit weird but still impressive)
Dunno when it will be finished, but i heard some month ago he was doing some progress... we'll see

http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/
a quite satistying remake project for Streets of Rage, i played it all and i really enjoyed it
i heard they had some problem with Sega, still i don't know how it actually finished that story, but the game was finished and i own my copy on laptop Tongue

Prolly some other stuff but i don't remember atm.

For Crimson Echoes fans, their Chrono Compendium sub-forum has been reopened after 6 years hidden from public: https://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/...board=33.0

I'll drop a link to JUMP here, it's probably my favourite SMW hack. It takes some of the unfettered creativity of the older SMW hacks, but keeps it tempered with quality almost all of the way through. Be careful though, since the difficulty shoots up halfway into world 2, and you'll probably wet your pants every time you see that "morcel/morceau" is the creator of a level. Tongue

http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=13512

I also like Zelda Parallel Worlds. It's in a bit of an awkward position for some people since it's more difficult than people expect from a Zelda game, which causes many fans of vanilla to shy away. But other than a couple hitches (the parallel tower in particular is way too long and you go through it too many times), I feel it falls under "tough, but fair". I haven't checked in a bit, but it's also the most complete LTTP hack that I've found in general.

I'm ignoring the hacks from Insane Difficulty (http://www.insanedifficulty.com/) since half of you have probably been there anyways. But most of those hacks are gold.

Well, I wouldn't call it a "scene" per se, but there are some people who have done some decently good work documenting SNES Shadowrun, one of my favorite games. One of those people is someone called Dragoon Zero, who unfortunately seems to have disappeared, so I'm stuck piddling away at trying to document stuff myself, which is not my forte.

I'd really like to make a rebalanced/hardtype hack of Shadowrun.

As I predicted, you guys have good taste! Some really interesting projects there.

Secret of Mana is still getting attention, I see. I never finished it, but the gameplay really left an impression on me, it was very addicting. I'll have to download that improvement and try it asap. Also didn't know you worked in Crimson Echoes, Gi. You're right, Flames of Eternity botched the dialogue in parts -- I'm keeping to the original CE myself.

That Castlevania: SotN project looks promising... although it'll probably take a while till it's done. Bookmark'd.

@Seibaby: I know the guy you're referring to, I've seen him on the shadowrun gamefaqs board. I was wondering what became of his efforts. I'd love it if there's a way to expand the game somehow -- new places, equipment, missions -- or at least improving the existing elements. I'm a diehard fan of shadowrun and the snes version is the superior one IMO. So yeah.
