I'm almost 16 years old and have been on and off (mainly off. I get into it whenever I happen to come across a ROM hack/video that I'm really impressed with) with romhacking for about 3 years in the areas of Super Mario World and focused on a ton of Final Fantasy 1 a while back. I never got into coding, ASM, etc. mainly because I didn't take it seriously enough, but I understood the basics and some advanced strategies in both games. I've completed a Super Mario World ROM hack which was on my previous computer, however I never uploaded it to SMWCentral or anything.
Dude, you have 3x more hacking years than me and worked on twice more game than me. xD

Well there is two ways to do things. The first one is fun; you take the existing editors available (mainly FF3usME, FF3SE and FF6LE) and you do a mod while balancing stuff with the FFVI knowledge you got. This is what most peopel do and some stop after this.
The second way include everything from the first way but you try to understand the data and most important learn how to code. You spend time doing searches on this forum, slick productions and mnrogar when you try to understand something and you read every important document available and most important you keep a copy. You can get into event modification, then with practice you create your own or/and you give yourself coding or modification challenges and try to figure out some of the commented stuff in the disassemblies.
In the end it depends what you are looking for. FF3us is the easiest SNES game to make a mod of with all the available tools, but there is still unknown areas left to explore to those who have a decent knowledge of the game, code wise. Plus the more you know the better and more original your hack can be.
Thanks for the well informed reply. I've been looking through a lot of FF3usME lately with the weapon/enemy editor. I'm thinking of ripping a boss from another game (preferably a Final Fantasy game. Most likely II to V) in the sprite editor and take a shot at making a boss. Will probably take a while to understand what to do, though.
