RE: FF6 Steam Version - DarkPhoenix - 12-27-2015

Started to play through this sucker today. Just left off outside of Jidoor; about to do the Opera House scene.

Personal opinions:

  1. I'm somewhat split on how good or bad the new sprites are, but I do love the new color schemes for the characters. A great benefit of not having limited 16 color palettes is that the characters can actually look very different. Cyan in particular looks much better than his 16-bit incarnation. OTOH, most of the portraits look terrible. Edgar in particular looks like an ostrich.
  2. Who's the jackass who decided all the menus needed to be redone? I get leaving the mobile phone menus in for mouse users, but why the hell aren't there classic style menus like FF4 and FF5 have? And why did you split the magic list into three parts for the three magic categories? It makes finding spells a major PITA.
  3. A side effect of the aforementioned battle menu change; all of the enemy layouts are horribly squashed.
  4. Why in the hell is there an option to have the game tell you what to do next? Isn't the menu showing the rundown of events so far enough? Now I don't mind reminders (like Phantasy Star 4's "Talk" option, which is good for a quick reminder of your next goal), but I horribly dislike immersion-breaking "Go here and do this, dumbass" style instructions, and that's exactly what these are. PLUS you outline the next destination on the map with a red outline, in case your players are REALLY stupid? WTF SE?
  5. I love the changes made to Blitz and Bushido, though I don't know how many will. With Blitz, you can actually SEE what keys you pressed as you enter the Blitz, so you know ahead of time if you screwed up or not. I would assume this is likely to help people who aren't very good at actually inputting the commands, as you can see which keys you hit/didn't hit during your input. I still tend to get "Incorrect Blitz Input", but know I can tell WHY. And Bushido is a menu of the 8 techniques, and rather than having to wait for the bar to select your technique, each technique takes a certain amount of time to execute after selection.
  6. Why exactly can I only select Rages I've already obtained on the Rage menu?
  7. Good old gutless SE, censoring the game again. Despite having the "Celes is chained to the wall" sprite in the sprite data, they wimped out and ran the scene like they did in FF6A. Worse, now the guard apparently knocks Celes out with the force of his amazing speech. WTF?

This describes pretty much the direction that new-gen games are taking, and it's one of the main reasons i hate them so much.

Yep, I fully agree. Though I did think last night after writing this, that I can't wait to see how they reconcile this system with the fact that the World of Ruin is so wide-open. Is the tip going to say "Go to Kefka's Tower" the entire WOR Laugh ?

RE: FF6 Steam Version - Tenkarider - 12-27-2015

Who knows, maybe Celes will ask Setzer to follow a new bird each time you finish to do stuff in that place Laugh
maybe they even try to tell you which one is the easiest route to follow

RE: FF6 Steam Version - DarkPhoenix - 01-01-2016

It's too bad Lijj's portraits don't seem to be here anymore; I'd bet they'd look 1000x better than SE's attempts at the character portraits.
