What is useful with PHA, PHX and PHY is that you free up one or many register so you can do anything you want with them. Before their original value(s) is/are used again, you reset the register with their original values with the pull instruction(s).

Also, if you ever need intermediate RAM, you can use $1C to $1E without worrying, at least when you deal with code in bank C0.
