This is a fascinating study. I'm checking around in C2 to see if the same possibility would exist for Rages. For example, could you have whatever character is in Umaro's spot learn and use rages, freeing up Gau's slot as a blank canvas?

EDIT: The answer is Yes. The character code for who learns rages via Leap is located at $C2/48E1. Change '0B' to whomever. Note, however, that this one line doesn't set the "Leap" status to the character, unenlisting them from the party. That's fine for my hack, since I have the Leap command disabled. However, more work would be needed to determine where to set the Leap status.

You only need to change all checks for Gau. The setting of leap remains the same. You need to change the code on available characters. From what I understand, $1EDE cover characters $00-$07 and $1EDF characters $08-$0D. From right to left:

Code:
+$1EDE sncccccc cccccccc
s: there is at least one saved game (go to load screen after title screen instead of playing intro)
n: go to first Narshe scene after magitek march (instead of back to the title screen)
            c: available characters

So basically, for Umaro, change the following $300B (and the one you mentioned) to $300D and instead of #$08 use #$20. $1EDF remains the same since Gau and Umaro are on the same byte. I think I covered all checks in bank $C2:

Code:
C2/1D0D: AD DF 1E     LDA $1EDF
C2/1D10: 89 08        BIT #$08

C2/1EA9: A9 08        LDA #$08
C2/1EAB: 0C DF 1E     TSB $1EDF

C2/48E6: A9 08        LDA #$08
C2/48E8: 1C DF 1E     TRB $1EDF  (remove Gau from party)

C2/2FB0: AD DF 1E     LDA $1EDF
C2/2FB3: 89 08        BIT #$08    (is Gau enlisted and not Leapt?)

C2/4840: AE 0B 30     LDX $300B   (Which character is Gau)

Hmmm.... I'll double-check tomorrow to make sure I didn't miss anything, but those changes didn't work. I still have Umaro leaping, but Gau being removed from the party.

In this instance, can you help me understand why $08/$20 are Gau/Umaro instead of the usual $0B/$0D? I've been spending the past week looking through disassemblies, and I haven't yet been able to determine why it's sometimes one way and sometimes another.

(By the way, this community is about 10x nicer than the Final Fantasy Tactics community. It's a breath of fresh air.)

Gau is position 3 (from 0) on the available characters byte ($1EDF), so the byte value to check or set is #$08. Since Umaro is 2 above Gau ($0D - $0B = 2), byte value to check is #$20. You probably (or maybe don't) know a single bit set on a byte can have a value of #$01, #$02, #$04, #$08, #$10, #$20, #$40, #$80 from positions 0 to 7. A byte value with multiple bits set is an addition of 2 or more of those values.

In the code I've posted, the BIT, TSB and TRB instructions does operations and / or checks on the available characters byte.
Details on them can be found here: http://assassin17.brinkster.net/thegun.htm

As for what the code I've posted, I might have missed something, I can't tell. I would assume everything concerning Rage is taken care in bank $C2, but it might not be the case.

Not 100% on this, but there might be battle event coding that affects who is removed from the party.

Yes you are right! There are actually two battle events to change, when Gau comes back after a battle and when he runs away after you hit him. It would still need to be tested but changing the actor ID on those two battle events should work.

Code:
[Gau appears on the Veldt after a battle]
D0A9F1: 0E            Clear animations
D0A9F2: 03 0B FE A9   Animation for character 1(GAU) at $D0A9FE
D0A9F6: 0F            Excecute animations
D0A9F7: 13 0B         Add actor $0B(GAU) as a taget
D0A9F9: 11            Open dialogue window at bottom of the screen
D0A9FA: 01 FE         Display long battle dialogue $FE at bottom of the screen
                         "GAU: Uwaoo~!!"
D0A9FC: 10            Close dialogue window at bottom of the screen
D0A9FC: FF            End of battle event

[Gau runs away after you hit him once]
D0B421: 0E            Clear animations
D0B422: 03 0B 36 B4   Animation for character 1(GAU) at $D0B436
D0B426: 0F            Excecute animations
D0B427: 11            Open dialogue window at bottom of the screen
D0B428: 01 39         Display long battle dialogue $39 at bottom of the screen
"GAU: Uwaou!! Waooo……ooo! You……strangers…! Go away! You scare animals"
D0B42A: 0E            Clear animations
D0B42B: 03 0B 55 B4   Animation for character 1(GAU) at $D0B455
D0B42F: 04 0B AB B4   Animation for character 2(GAU) at $D0B4AB
D0B433: 0F            Excecute animations
D0B434: 10            Close dialogue window at bottom of the screen
D0B434: FF            End of battle event

Taken from the battle events scripts available here.

Awesome stuff! I'll be sure to try it. I've been doing ASM since.... hmmm... MAYBE 2 weeks ago? I'm still a total noob. I'm coming into this as a boardgame designer trying to learn just enough code to get by.

Anyway, I found one more place in my notes today that needed to be edited. I'll bold it below so that other people reading this thread can get a full list of the C2 codes.

Quote:Code:
C2/1D0D: AD DF 1E LDA $1EDF
C2/1D10: 89 08 BIT #$08

C2/1EA9: A9 08 LDA #$08
C2/1EAB: 0C DF 1E TSB $1EDF

C2/2FB0: AD DF 1E LDA $1EDF
C2/2FB3: 89 08 BIT #$08 (is Gau enlisted and not Leapt?)

C2/4840: AE 0B 30 LDX $300B (Which character is Gau)

C2/48E0: AE 0B 30 LDX $300B (which character is Gau)
C2/48E3: 20 E3 47 JSR $47E3 (remove him from all parties)

C2/48E6: A9 08 LDA #$08
C2/48E8: 1C DF 1E TRB $1EDF (remove Gau from party)

When I did this without editing D0, it successfully removed Umaro (my test subject) from the party while keeping Gau in. However, Gau was still "hidden" in 50% of the battles that followed. More importantly, I lost Umaro permanently. Tomorrow, I'll try editing the events. Is there a 3rd event that covers Gau joining your party for the first time? This is when you give him the Dried Meat.
